earth day | tree planting | picnic celebration
happy belated earth day everyone!
this year, kate quinn organics decided to take our helping hands outdoors to one of our beautiful pacific northwest trails and plant trees. this event was so much fun! it involved us planting 30 new samplings along the issaquah pickering trail where blackberry bushes had been cut back to expose a babbling creek home to many salmon. it was also the first day of the pickering barn farmers market where we ate crepes, fed alpacas and bought ingredients from local farmers to make a delicious dish for our company earth day picnic. we love any opportunity to give back and i hope you have fun celebrating with us! enjoy!
issaquah-pickering trail.

planting the little saplings.

the creek that was cleared so that salmon can swim free.

pickering barn where we supported local farmers.
essential bakery bread which is a seattle favorite. they have the cutest little cafes!
can you believe that these gorgeous flowers from the skagit tulip growers are only 10$?! during all of april they have a tulip festival that is a must see if you are ever in washington.
yakima valley farms has the best produce. these magnificent green onions were used for the quiche we made for our picnic.
this asparagus was also used in the quiche! from yakima valley farms.

organic free range eggs from the cutest lil dairy farm in yakima!

feeding the alpacas.

these crepes were delish!!!

here are the quiches we made with some of the ingredients from the farmers market. for a little extra flavor we added an organic truffle salt from PCC markets which is one of our favorite places to shop for food. they are the largest co-op in the country and support many local farmers as well as carry many different products promoting organic and sustainable practices. fortunately for us, their kirkland store is right down the street and is a kqo favorite place to lunch.

happy earth day!!
some of the kqo crew enjoying a much deserved sunny day after all this rain and grey we have been having. once we were done eating, we helped pick up trash around the park which is located right up the street from our headquarters.

a bald eagle made an appearance at our picnic!
the quiche was a hit!
hope you all had a wonderful earth day!!!

design your own nursery winner | emily peck

and the winner is……….
emily peck!
after our winner was selected by a third party, we asked kate quinn to please tell us a bit about the inspiration she got from emily’s pinterest board:
“the cohesiveness of emily’s story evokes a feeling of childhood summertime whimsy, I can relate to the color, texture, silhouette and character, all illustrating a feeling that will be so fun to create with. fresh air, cut grass and watermelon… who doesn’t love that!! i was also super excited to see the fox and of course beloved naturism which all will be super fun design elements to play with. we can’t wait to start designing it for her.”
-kate quinn
meet emily.

Q: Where did you get the inspiration for your board?
A: When I first heard about the contest, this art print {by watersounds on Etsy} immediately popped into my head as it was something I had recently pinned and perfectly captured the colors and feeling I was going for. From there, I just wanted to build on the color palate and natural feel.
Q: Tell us about your dream nursery:
A: My dream nursery is similar to my Pinterest board.
I love being a mom of 2 boys but if I could design a nursery that is true to my heart, it would be feminine with warm oranges/yellows/greens {instead of pink}, light, cozy, and with lots of natural, outdoor elements – something that would smell like summer and want you to cuddle up and take a nap. I also love incorporating antique elements or even things I saved from when I was little alongside new items to create a “collected” look.
Tell us about being a mommy:
A: Being a mommy is a really hard job – I’m still learning! My son is nearly 3 ½ and we just welcomed our second boy on April 1st so I’m still adjusting to life with 2 kids. There are many days I feel like I’m not cut out for the job or it gets hard to juggle, especially with working full time. However, if there’s anything I’ve learned with going from one child to two…it’s that the moments are fleeting and they won’t be little forever. I’m just trying to enjoy the ride as much as I can while it’s happening.
baby and big brother
Q: What is your buying style?
A: Modern, whimsical, classic? This is a hard question because I feel like my style is always evolving or I like a little of everything, making it hard to commit to one “look”. I like things that have meaning and look like they were acquired over time. I love lots of eclectic things, vintage things, and classic things but I like it to look simple, clean, and cohesive. More and more, I’ve been into modern staples with clean lines {especially mid-century modern} pieces.
Q: What is your favorite family dinner?
A: I’m not a huge meat eater but my FAVORITE dinner is my mom’s meatloaf, with mashed potatoes, and corn. My family always makes fun of the fact that I mix it all together and eat it as one giant pile of mush – which, I agree, is kind of gross. It’s really the only meal I ever do that with!
Q: What are your favorite pair of shoes?
A: Being born and raised in the Pacific Northwest, casual style is where I’m most comfortable. Ballet flats, TOMS, or flip flops in summer is where it’s at!
Q: How do you take time to relax out of your busy schedule?
A: If I ever have time to myself to actually relax, I’m usually working on my {very mediocre} photography skills or at the computer immersed in blog reading or writing posts/editing photos for my own blog. I like to feel productive so it’s hard for me to just sit still!
thank you so much emily! we look forward to creating your new baby nursery!

store feature | k.d.’s treehouse
located at:
2911 devine street
columbia, sc 29205
803.748.0198
founder (s):
k.d.’s treehouse was founded by kris burns and dea baughman. kris retired in 2012. it is now owned by me, dea baughman and managed by conni young who has been with the company now for 4 years.
what inspires you?
becoming a mom to a little boy named thatcher inspired me to open k.d.’s treehouse. his playful, sweet spirit reminds me life is short and to be in the moment. being disenchanted with the selection of boy’s clothing, especially in our area (smocked jon jons are popular in the south), thatcher also inspired me to maintain a wide selection of fun, colorful and comfortable boy’s clothing, even though he has sized out of the treehouse. with conni’s daughter harper being a mainstay at the shop, little girls are certainly not forgotten… we just make sure that we order in small batches so that outfits stay unique, and no one shows up to school or the same event dressed alike!
what does your store have that no other store can offer?
k.d.’s treehouse is a life style store offering a thoughtful selection of 100% organic cotton children’s clothing in addition to eco-friendly gifts, gear toys and more! Customers can rest assured that products in our store have been carefully researched, are non-toxic and ethically manufactured. we’ve created a no-pressure environment where people feel comfortable asking questions about being a new parent or about choosing the most environmentally sound products to fit their life style. we also have strong ties to our community, often contributing auction items to local schools and churches, as well as hosting free family-friendly events throughout the year.
what is you favorite kate quinn organics print of all time?
my favorite print of all time is the seahorse print…. connie loves the seahorse as well, but is also quite fond of the pink elephant print.
what are you most excited about in the near future?
we are most excited about the expansion of baby gear products k.d.’s treehouse will be carrying in the near future. so much research has been done and we look forward to “branching out” by offering many new products over the next year.
